For my first two years using Webflow, I did not understand the benefit of global color swatches. The practical lesson was simple: one shared color should have one shared definition. Webflow now provides color variables for that job.

Change teal to orange once

Suppose your headings, buttons, and backgrounds share a teal brand color. If each element stores its own color, changing the brand to orange means finding every instance. Instead, create a Color variable named Brand / Primary and apply it to those styles. Changing that variable updates styles that reference it.

Webflow's Variables panel supports colors alongside other design values. Open Variables, create a Color variable, and assign it from the relevant color controls. Inspect the whole page after changing its value. Manually entered colors remain separate and need their own review.

Build a small style guide

Keep a page showing your headings, body text, buttons, backgrounds, and form states. Include black, gray, success, error, and brand colors. The original example used orange and a darker brand variation. Give each value a purpose instead of naming everything after its current appearance.

A gradient can still need separate stop adjustments. Check which values reference variables. Test contrast for text, buttons, and error messages after any palette change. A shared variable can spread an unsuitable color as quickly as a useful one.

If you start with Relume, import its style guide before styling individual pages. For copied Relume sections, review Class Sync so their classes follow your existing system. Start by replacing one repeated color and checking every place it appears.
